LASTING
CORRECTION OF SKIN DEFECTS AND WRINKLES
PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) was first discovered in Germany in 1902 by the chemist O. Röhm and was patented in 1928. The first medical use of PMMA was in 1936 as dental prostheses. It has since been extensively used in a variety of medical procedures, notably as bone replacement of the jaw and hip. Artecoll® - Breakthrough soft tissue augmentation technology

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARTECOLL PATIENTS Artecoll is an injectable implant used to treat static facial lines, enlarge lips, fill in facial imperfections, and diminish nasal labial folds. The product is permanent. Artecoll is purchased by the syringe and the amount required depends on the degree of correction required. This can usually be determined by Dr. Middleton. It is important to remember that the complete effect of the implant will not be apparent for up to three months. If you desire further correction, you must wait for that amount of time before booking another appointment to purchase additional Artecoll. No follow-up is otherwise required. There is no sedation or local anesthetic required and patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after their treatment. The effects of the topical anesthetic applied to the treated areas are temporary and sensation will return within an hour of the treatment. After your Artecoll treatment some redness or swelling may occur. This can be treated with ice and will last from a few hours to a few days. Bruising, while infrequent, usually lasts 1-2 days, although this varies from patient to patient. Again, ice can be applied should bruising occur. In order to minimize the risks of lumps developing, it is important to massage the implant for a few minutes every few hours for the first couple of days after your injection. This will help to ensure that it remains soft and evenly spread throughout the treated area. It is possible that after the swelling has gone down, the results of the injection may seem to diminish. This is a normal occurrence resulting from the collagen component of the Artecoll being reabsorbed by your body. The desired results will be evident over the next few months as your body manufactures your own collagen capsules around the individual particles of the injected polymethylmethacrylate contained within the Artecoll.
