ArteSense™
What is ArteSense composed of?
ArteSense combines three key ingredients into one injectable implant. Microscopic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) beads are folded into just enough collagen to carry them through a fine needle. A trace of anesthetic, lidocaine, is added to the solution to dull any discomfort during injection.
How does ArteSense work?
ArteSense works by stimulating the growth of natural collagen, a vital skin protein lost over time. Collagen adds volume and structure to skin. Just as a grain of sand in an oyster transforms itself into a valuable pearl, the injected, tiny PMMA microspheres are enveloped by your own collagen, binding them into place under the skin. This process takes about 2 to 3 months, as the collagen carrier used to deliver the PMMA under your skin is absorbed and your body forms new collagen.
What is PMMA?
PMMA is an inert substance that has been implanted in the body for nearly a century. It has been used in ocular lenses, dental work, bone repair, artificial hips and limbs, and pacemakers since the early 1930s. It is a proven and safe biocompatible substance.
Is ArteSense safe?
Extremely. ArteSense has close to a decade of safety information and experience in the Canadian market. Over 400,000 patients worldwide have been safely treated. However, as with all medical procedures, they are subject to certain risks.
Will it hurt?
Injections are often painless, but an anesthetic can allay any worry and is often recommended before lip augmentations as this is one of the most sensitive areas of the face.
How much ArteSense do I need?
More than one syringe or treatment may be required to achieve the results that you desire. In some cases, 2 or 3 treatments may be needed. Over-correction of your initial treatment is not advisable.Many variables, such as the depth of a fold/wrinkle as well as your body's response, will dictate the amount.

Is a skin test required?
Skin testing is optional and is at the physician's discretion. One person in a thousand may develop a sensitivity or allergy to the collagen in ArteSense.
How long does ArteSense last?
The length of time is very individual and is dependent on your body's response to the implant. Results with ArteSense have been shown to last 10 years or longer. Although the microspheres will reside permanently in your skin, new lines or wrinkles may develop as the aging process continues.
Are there any side effects?
As with all injectable implants, swelling, redness, lumps/bumps, bruising and itchiness may occur after treatment. These symptoms usually subside in a few days. Cold compresses and acetaminophen help alleviate pain and/or discomfort. The use of ASA (Aspirin®) should be avoided as it may increase bruising at the site of injection. What should I expect after my treatment?
The implant may feel somewhat hard at first. however, it will soften over time. Keep in mind that the implant acts by stimulating your body to produce new collagen and connective tissue to surround each microsphere. The complete effect of the implant may not be apparent for up to three months. After the swelling has gone down, there is a possibility that your wrinkles may temporarily return after a few weeks. This is a normal occurrence, and they should start to disappear again over the next few months.

Should I limit facial mimicry after my treatment?
Yes. It is important that the amount of movement in the area injected be immobilized as much as possible for the next 48-72 hours (e.g. minimize smoking and/or drinking from a straw). Your new implant requires this amount of time to settle and for the microspheres to become enveloped.
