Q: What happens to our cheeks and nasolabial folds as we age?
A: Our cheeks sag and nasolabial folds (commonly known as "smile lines" or "laugh lines") deepen as we age due to a loss of supporting tissues including collage, fat and bone.
Q: What preventative measures can we take when we’re younger (in our 30s or 40s for example) to keep a younger-looking appearance in the face?
A: Genetic factors which contribute to aging cannot yet be altered. Factors which can be modified include preventative measures such as leading a healthy lifestyle with appropriate diet and exercise. Smoke, stress, excess alcohol intake and sun exposure create free radicals which hasten tissue breakdown thereby contributing to premature aging. Appropriate sleep, skin care , sunscreens, vitamins, and supplements may actually slow down the aging process.
Q: How do Facial Fillers help?
A: Injectable fillers have been used for years and are more corrective in nature. They are used to reverse the tell tale signs of aging by restoring volume to the midface, deep folds and lips.
Q: What has changed in fillers since they were first used? How do you use them now compared to how you would’ve used them when you started out? -
A: Collagen was one of the first fillers used in the early 80's but required skin testing and had a short life span measured in weeks. Newer products, such as the Hyaluronic acids which are naturally occurring sugars, last much longer due to the cross- linking of the product's molecules. These include Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Volumna and Ovitra to name but a few of the most popular ones.
Radiesse is a calcium based product popular for bony augmentation and nasal contouring , while Sculptra is good for facial fat wasting and Artesense, a permanent product, for deep lines and acne scars. Other therapies, including the latest ultrasound based skin tightening with Ulthera can help increase and tighten the skin's own collagen leading to a tightening effect in the jowls , midface and neck.
Q: Vampire Facelift, Exactly what is it? How does it work? How long does the procedure take?
A: The "Vampire Facelift" is a new novel approach involves mixing the patient's own blood derived platelet rich plasma with Selphyl to help rejuvenate the skin with natural growth factors. This 1 hour procedure is becoming increasingly popular in treating fine lines around the eyes and mouth.
Q: What happens in our 50s and 60s? What are ways to fix the volume we’ve lost then?
A: Aging into the 50's and 60's inevitably involves loosing of the neck muscles with redundant loose skin in the lower face and neck. These corrections are best achieved surgically through face and neck lifting, however fillers, including injectable fat are often useful in combination. Fat harvested with a syringe from the patient's lower abdomen , can be used alone or mixed with Selphyl and used in combination with surgery to replace lost volume in the midface. Selphyl, when mixed with the patient's own blood derived platelet rich plasma , adds growth factors and increases the longevity and results of the injected fat. This fat and Selphyl injection procedure can even be used on it's own in patient's not wishing surgery itself, for whatever reason !
Q: In your expert opinion, what do you think the future holds for injectables?
A: The future of injectables will include increased longevity of the product. Fat injections will one day include stem cell purification and injection for tissue regeneration!
