BOTOX INJECTIONS

"Botox" is the common name for botulinus toxin, which is injected in very small amounts by a micro needle. This process is correctly called cosmetic denervation although most people call it “botox injections.” The following information is about cosmetic denervation / botox injections. “BotoxR” is correctly the proprietary name of Allergan Inc. and is a drug. In Canada, unlike the United States, the advertising of a drug such as Botox is not permitted. The references in Dr. Middleton’s website to botox do not refer to the drug Botox, and are intended to provide the public with information to assist in evaluating cosmetic procedure options. For ease of reading Toronto cosmetic surgeon Dr. Middleton will refer to cosmetic denervation as botox injections.

What is the treatment like?

The botox injection is designed to be a simple and safe procedure. Using a tiny micro needle, a very small amount is injected, very precisely, into the desired locations. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injections is said to be minimal. Most patients compare the sensation of a botox injection to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you should be able to resume normal activities immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to the office. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the botox injection site. This can be covered with make-up.

What are the limitations of botox injections?

Botox injections are not permanent. The effects of the injections should last from three to six months. You may be recommended to have botox injections about two to three times a year. The early clinical studies indicate that the duration of treatment benefits is increased over time so that you should require botox injections less frequently in the future. Also, the duration of effect varies from patient to patient.

What to Expect

Botox injections have been performed worldwide for over 25 years. The price of a treatment varies depending on the number of units required. The results achieved with the botox injection are related to the amount injected in each individual site. The amount required varies from patient to patient and is influenced by the strength and thickness of the muscle at the site of the botox injection and the amount of previous botox injections. Results are said to become visible about 10 days after treatment. If, after that time, you desire further correction, additional units can be purchased. No follow-up is otherwise required. Botox injections typically last on average from three to six months.

There is no sedation or local anesthetic required for botox injections. Typically patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Some patients will experience redness and swelling that will disappear within a couple of hours of the treatment. Others may experience bruising at the botox injection site. This can be treated with ice and covered with make-up.
