Constantly evolving, plastic surgery seems to become more and more innovative by the second, anti-aging being at the forefront of this evolution. In the past decade there has been an increasing desire for non-surgical ways to combat the signs of aging. Anywhere from Botox to dermal fillers, there are a number of minimally invasive procedures available, all promising to erase wrinkles and provide a more youthful appearance. The latest cosmetic anti-aging solution is called the Vampire Facial.
The vampire facial harvests the patient’s own blood. Specifically, the blood platelets which are rich in growth factors that when deposited into the skin, help to minimize wrinkles giving patients a more youthful and glowing complexion.
What Is The Active Ingredient Used In The Vampire Facial?
Platelet-rich plasma, better known as PRP, is the active ingredient in the vampire facial. It was originally developed to help heal injuries to muscles, tendons, and bone. When injected into a torn muscle or tendon, PRP promotes the healing process thus speeding up recovery. As Stanford Medical described it, “The basic idea behind PRP injection is to deliver high concentrations of growth factors to an area of injury, with hope of stimulating a healing response and reducing inflammation in the tissue.” The same idea applies to reducing the signs of aging.
How Is The Vampire Facial Performed?
During the vampire facial procedure, Dr. Middleton draws blood from the patient’s arm and then spin the blood in a centrifuge, separating the plasma from the red blood cells and platelets. The plasma which contains a number of specialized cells called growth factors, is then applied to the skin using a technique referred to as micro-needling. Micro-needling uses a roller with a number of tiny needles that deposits the PRP into the dermal layer of the skin. Once the PRP is deposited into the skin it stimulates cellular regeneration, new tissue formation and collagen production. All of which improve the overall look of the skin by minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and tightening the skin.
Is The Vampire Facial Painful?
A numbing cream is applied to the patients face prior to the micro-needling process, this minimizes pain and discomfort. No pain medication is required after the procedure.
Is There Any DownTime?
The vampire facial is performed in Dr. Middleton’s Toronto office and takes approximately 30 min. Patients can return to work immediately following the procedure. The results of the vampire facial can be seen about 3 weeks after the initial treatment with continual improvement seen for 12 months.
As with most ground-breaking cosmetic surgery procedures, Hollywood has taken notice. The vampire facial was featured on Rachel Ray and demonstrated on Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. Viewers watched Kim Kardashian get vampire facial in a cosmetic surgeons office.
